This SOKYO ceremonial hojicha roasted powdered green tea is so fascinating to me. I've developed a love for matcha over the last few years, matcha tends to taste a bit grassy to me, when consumed as a traditional hot tea, so I've gravitated towards using it in smoothie rather than drinking it in tea form. I was curious to see how I would feel about this hojicha tea, which is a roasted green tea, also powdered like matcha is. This is described as "rich umami" in flavor. Umami is a descriptive word referring to a unique category of flavor or "mouth feel," and as I understand it- it references almost a savory aspect of a food, that is uniquely satisfying in that way. Some describe this tea as nutty, and I would agree. When you describe something as "savory" you think of salty, but this is not salty, just to be clear. It has a deeper flavor to it than matcha. Richer, more settled Something to note, the makers recommend using this hojicha powder up within two months of opening it, for the ideal flavor and freshness. I suspect it gets slightly more bitter as it ages, further and further past the two-month mark. Refrigerating should help extend its life if you can't finish it in the two-month time frame. This is a small bag of powder, but you use just one teaspoon per cup of tea, so this small amount ends up lasting a long while. The recipe makes for a very small cup of tea, because evidently the 1 teaspoon serving size- you mix with only 2 ounces of hot water. This tea is best served in actual teacups since it makes such a small cup of tea. Rounded bottoms to cups make it easier to whisk in. (Note: I couldn't find any specific instructions on how to make this tea, not on the listing for this tea, nor on the product itself, I had to look it up online.) You whisk the powder in, and it dissolves fairly well, although not fully. Better yet, blend with a handheld frother to make the tea bit aerier and lighter. This tea was still too earthy in taste for my liking when served plain as a hot tea, and I couldn't get all the powder to mix into the small amount of hot water. I discovered that if you add a generous splash of half n' half, it makes it much more palatable and enjoyable in my opinion, and even better than that is making this up as a "latte" which calls for 6.8 oz of hot milk to the teaspoon of Hojicha powder. Personally, I like a spoonful of honey to sweeten it as well, so "hojicha latte" it is from here on out for me!!! I love that this tea is grown and perfected in Japan, they mention this particular hojicha was grown in Mie Prefecture, which I found very neat to know exactly where in Japan this came from.
the taste is wrongbut the tin is a bit destoryed
